An 'Uncle Andy' Story:
------------------------------
I would go visit Uncle Andy and Aunt Vera quite often as a kid growing up in Prior Lake, MN. We were always welcome. "Come and use the facilities!"; he would say. Uncle Andy had problems with sore hips and hands due to Arthritis in his later years and you could tell many times that he was uncomfortable and in some pain.
My standard greeting when walking in the door was something like; "Hi Uncle Andy - how are you doing today?" His standard response was; "Well, pretty good I suppose.... considering the alternative!"
"Considering the Alternative..."
I had never really given much thought to those words as a kid, but after his memorial service, we were back at his home on Prior Lake. All that was left of him was in a simple wooden urn and that was sitting on a counter top next to the fireplace. I shared what had become this common back-and-forth greeting with those in the room.
Someone then made a small, hand-written note and taped it to the side of the urn. The note simply read... "The Alternative" :)
