9/11 Figure, Flight Attendant. Sandy Waugh was a flight attendant on United Airlines Flight 93. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the flight was highjacked by four terrorists. After the terrorists seized control, several people were able to make phone calls and learned of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The passengers took a vote and made the decision to fight back to prevent the terrorists from crashing the plane into their intended target. She and the other flight attendants boiled water and three passengers planned to charge the terrorists. She placed a call to her husband, a United Airlines pilot, to tell him their plan and to say goodbye. Shortly afterwards, the plane crashed into a field two miles north of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing her and the other forty-three people on board. The impact left a forty foot crater. Some of her belongings were found in the crash: her Greensboro library card, her family photos, several store discount cards, and her flight handbook. They were returned and are on display at the Greensboro Historical Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina where she lived.
