Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as a Private in Company I, 36th United States Colored Troops under the name of "Gardiner". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Chapins Farm, Virginia on September 29, 1864. His citation reads "Rushed in advance of his brigade, shot a rebel officer who was on the parapet rallying his men, and then ran him through with his bayonet". His Medal was awarded to him on April 6, 1865.
