Civil War Veteran US Congressman. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the start of the Civil War and served in Company D, Third Virginia Cavalry. Following the war he served as sheriff and surveyor of Charles City County, Virginia, and was elected to the United States Congress from Virginia, serving from 1897 to 1913. He later served as superintendent of Battle Abbey, the Confederate Memorial in Richmond.
