As a Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, during WW II, he was taken prisoner by the Japanese on Corregidor, Philippine Islands, until his release at the end of the war. Also a veteran of the Korean War, he retired as a Captain in 1957. With his expertise as an armorer from the USMC, he opened a gunshop after his retirement, which is still in operation managed by his sons.
