Mrs. Barnum Dead at 86 at Son's Home
Had Been in Ill Health for Years; Private Funeral Tomorrow
Mrs. Caroline Sears Barnum, 86, a resident of Syracuse 46 years, with the exception of three years she lived in Binghamton, died at 11 o'clock last night at the home of her son, William S. Estabrook, on the Fayetteville Road near Fayetteville. She was the mother of Jerome D. Barnum, publisher of the Post-Standard.
Mrs. Barnum was born at Newark Valley on Feb. 3, 1848, the daughter of the late Hart B. and Mrs. Cynthia Williams Sears. She was the last survivor of nine children, six sons and three daughters. Mrs. Barnum had been in failing health several years. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
She was married twice. Her first husband was Dr. Charles G. Estabrook who died in 1880. Her second marriage was to Theron E. Barnum.
Mr. and Mrs. Barnum made their Syracuse home for many years at 819 Comstock avenue. This home was closed in May when Mrs. Barnum went to Fayetteville to reside with Mr. Estabrook.
Surviving are three sons, Charles S. Estabrook and William S. Estabrook of Syracuse and Fayetteville, attorneys, and Jerome D. Barnum; and 10 grandchildren, Jerome D. Barnum Jr., T. Crouse Barnum and Lucia Jane Barnum, children of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Barnum; Elizabeth Estabrook, Charles S. Estabrook, Jr., Henry C. Estabrook and Harriet C. Estabrook, children of Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Estabrook; Mrs. George W. Driscoll, William S. Estabrook, Jr., and John Evans Estabrook, children of W. S. Estabrook.
Private funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at the Estabrook home.
