US Congressman, US Senator. Born in Epping, New Hampshire, he served in the Revolutionary War and afterwards settled on a farm near Monmouth, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts Senate (1803-05), when elected as a Democratic Republican to the Ninth and Tenth Congresses, serving (1805-09). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he relocated to Main and was appointed Sheriff of Kennebec County. During the War of 1812, he served as a Brigadier General in the Maine Militia, (1812-15). After the war, he was a member of the Massachusetts General Court in 1819, first president of the Maine Senate and a member of the Maine constitutional convention, (1819-20). With the admission of Maine as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate, reelected as a Crawford Republican and later reelected as Jacksonian, serving (1820-29). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as a collector of customs at Portland, (1829-37). He died at age 78 in Augusta, Main.
