Margaret Begg Thom was the second daughter and fourth child of George Thom and Catherine Liddell. She was born in Lanark, Scotland, UK. Following the usual Scottish naming pattern; Margaret was named for her paternal grandmother.

She immigrated to the US aboard the SS Furnessia. Margaret, her parents and her siblings arrived in the port of New York on September 19, 1893.

They lived in the mining camps of White County, Tennessee.

Margaret married Monroe Smiddie on August 21, 1910 in White County, Tennessee.
