Capt Griffith was born in Baltimore, Md. His father was David Griffith, a sea captain. His mother was Rebecca James, whose family was also of sea captains.
Capt Griffith lived in Reading as early as 1850. he was very well known and had a large circle of friends, especially among old soldiers.
He was married to Rosa McGiven, adopted daughter of the late Charles Evans, who died in 1899. They had two children, James M Griffith, and Elsie who married Winfield Wolf.
David Griffith was a veteran of both the Mexican and Civil War. At the outbreak of the Mexican War he became second lieutenant of Company B, Maryland and District of Columbia Volunteers, having been mustered on Sep 30, 1847. He was wounded by a lance in the engagement of Jalapa and mustered out on Jul 15, 1848.
Mr. griffith became a captain of Company A, 14th Pa. Vol, on April 25, 1861, and was assigned to the 5th Brigade, 2nd Division, Paterson's Army.

After the Civil War he enlisted in the regular army and served in the Indian country and Northwest frontier posts. He mustered out as brevet captain on Apr 15, 1883.
