Sumner Sherman Allen was born the son of John Bird Allen and Lillie Ann Snyder. They are buried in Oakgrove Cemetery Independence, Iowa. Sumner was married to Cora Belle Butterfield on February 12, 1913 in Walker, Iowa. She is buried in this cemetery. They were parents of ten children and had adopted her nephew, Maynard John after the death of his mother.

~0bit~Sumner Sherman Allen, 49, son of John Bird and Lillie Ann Snyder Allen, was born February 25, 1893, on the old Allen centennial farm, 6 miles south of Independence. When Sumner was eight years old he moved with his family to Independence where he was educated. He was associated with his father in the hardware business at Quasqueton for a number of years. Mr. Allen was united in marriage February 12, 1913 with Cora Belle Butterfield of Walker, Iowa. Shortly after Mr. and Mrs. Allen moved to a farm near Anamosa. They resided in that community until February, 1937, when they came to Cedar Rapids. Surviving are his wife and ten children: Paul Allen of Chicago; Maynard John Allen, of Anamosa; Mrs. Walter Shields, Norma, Marjorie, Betty, Beatrice, Arlene, Geraldine and Shirley, Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Maples, Elmhurst, Illinois and Mrs. Gertrude Isaacs, of Hollywood, California, and two grandchildren, Donald and Dickie Shields. One daughter, Bernadine preceded him in death. Burial was made at Quasqueton, on Monday, May 22.
