John T. Sutherland Sr.
John Thomas Sutherland Sr., 77, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at ECM Hospital after a brief illness.Mr. Sutherland was a native of Winston County but lived most of his life in Colbert and Lauderdale counties. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, Florence. He was a retired watchmaker and owner of Sutherland Jewelry. He was a member of Florence Jaycees, the North Florence Kiwanis, the VFW, the American Legion, the Disabled Veterans and the Forestry Association. He was a volunteer for the 96 Olympics and many other charitable organizations.Mr. Sutherland was preceded in death by his father and mother, Luther Grady and Mae Cooper Sutherland; and brother, Richard Sutherland.The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Elkins Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Barrett Long and Carl Seigenthaler officiating. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today at Elkins Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.Mr. Sutherland is survived by his wife of 55 years, Teola R. Sutherland; son, John T. Sutherland Jr. and wife, Carol Nell; daughter, Mae Austin and husband, Harry; three grandchildren, Caroline S.
