US Congressman. Born in a log cabin on Grant Mountain, between the communities of Edneyville and Bat Cave in Henderson County, North Carolina, he taught himself to read and write as he grew up. He began his career in politics when he was elected a representative to the North Carolina State Legislature General in 1889, serving until 1892. He then went on to be elected sheriff of Henderson County, in 1892 and served until 1896. He was elected as a Republican to represent North Carolina's 10th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1909 to 1911.
