John Allen was the fourth of six children of John Allen and Cornelia Bedeut.

John Allen married Sabina Maria Meyers Oct 26, 1758 in the Trinity Church, New York City, NY.

In the biography of Stephen Allen from "Lives of American Merchants", Volume II, edited by Freeman Hunt, there is the following passage:

"In the year 1769, Mr. Allen's father, who was a builder, was selected by government to superintend the erection of extensive barracks for the army stationed at Pensacola, East Florida. He died there of yellow fever, leaving his wife dependent upon her own exertions for the support of herself and three children."
