CORRIGAN - Funeral services for O.C. "Carroll" Nowlin, 91, of Corrigan were held Monday, March 22, 2004 at the First Baptist Church of Corriagan, with Pastor Jeff Devin and Pastor Bruce Austin officiating. Interment followed in Union Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Nowlin was born on Sept. 24, 1912 Tyler County and died Friday, March 19, in a Lufkin hospital. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pearl Swan Nowlin; sister Rhoberta Twohig and brother, Samuel S. Nowlin.
Mr. Nowlin attended public school at Pine Grove School through the fifth grade and completed school in Nacogdoches and received an education degree from Stephen F. Austin State College. After completing college, Mr. Nowlin joined the Citizens State Bank in Corrigan in 1933, working in all areas of the bank and retiring as senior vice president in 1979. Mr. Nowlin served as a director of the Citizens State Bank, Corrigan, from 1943 to 2002 and as director of First Bank, Groveton, from 1982 to 2002.
In his early years he was active in local civic affairs and served as director of the Corigan Housing Authority, managing local director of the Works Project Administrator (WPA), and secretary of the City of Corrigan from 1938 to 1974. He was a 60-year plus member and past master of the Corrigan Masonic Lodge No. 1103 AF&AM, a 50-year plus member and past patron of the Corrigan Order of the Eastern Star No. 641 and a member of the First Baptist Church, Corrigan.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Doris Swann Nowlin of Corrigan; sister-n-law, Jerry Nowlin of Houston; nieces, Mary Wilson and husband Don Wilson of Lufkin and Sandra Peterson of Cherino; nephews, Steven Nowlin of Cherino and Jim Twohig and wife Jeanie of Hudson; stepson, Randall L. Brooks of Houston; three grandchildren and numerous great-nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Matthew Page, Daniel Wilson, Jalon Peterson, Bryan Nowlin, Garrett Collins and Larry L. Smith. Honorary pall bearers were Joes Johnson, R.L. Bryant, Swepson Armour, John Sirman, Leroy Wright, M.A. Golden, Lloyd Adams and directors of the Citizens State Bank, Corrigan, and the First Bank, Groveton. Corrigan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
