Nina Towns Clifton, age 91, of the Marvin Yancey Community, Lyons, died Monday, September 19, 2011 in St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness. She was a native of Laurens County, and lived most of her life in Toombs County. Mrs. Clifton was a homemaker, a loving mother and doting grandmother, and served eight years on the Toombs County Board of Education. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and the Marvin Yancey Busy Bee Club. She loved fishing, going to the "Coast", spending time with family and friends, reading, The Atlanta Braves, and UGA football.
Mrs. Clifton was preceded in death by her husband Roderick Lee Clifton, Sr.; her parents, G.B. and Bessie Bracewell Towns; a brother, Dale B. Towns; a sister, Odessa Towns Conner; two sons, Roderick Lee Clifton, Jr. and Billy Clifton; and a grandson, Brad Clifton.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth Clifton of Greenville, SC; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Brenda and Burke Corbett of Lyons, Glenda and Ben Smith of Lyons, Penny and Wayne Moody of Lyons; seven grandchildren, Jess Clifton of Lyons, Renee Gilwreath and husband Troy of Anderson, SC, Candi Barnett and Husband Tim of Normantown, Kent Clifton of Anderson, SC, Leah Winton and husband Marc of Anderson, SC, Nina Townsend and husband Charles of Statesboro, Matthew Moody of Lyons; nine great-grandchildren, Bradley Clifton, Eve Gilwreath, Ty Gilwreath, Lucas Winton, Laney Winton all of Anderson SC, Hunter Clifton, Bo Barnett, Zeke Barnett all of Normantown, Charlie Townsend of Statesboro; one nephew Donnie Conner; three nieces, Margaret Ann Donnelly, Ann Sims, and Beverly Thigpen; and a special friend and caregiver Liza Taylor.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 22nd at 2:00 pm in the Providence Baptist Church with Reverend Jarrell Lillard, Donnie Conner, and Janice Slayden Polmatier officiating. Entombment will follow in the Clifton Family Cemetery.

The will receive friends at Mrs. Clifton's Home at 1686 Hwy. 147, Lyons, beginning at 6:00 pm Wednesday. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Clifton Family Cemetery Fund, C/O Mozelle Pye, 878 Lilliott Road, Lyons, GA 30436.
