Youngest child of Joseph and Mary Short Cowan. Not yet 2 years old when Mary died of TB. Doris grew up a city girl and loved her sisters and brothers dearly. She had a cold uncaring stepmother. At the age of 17 Doris left home and went to live with her sister Betty in St. Louis. Doris married George (Bud) Woodin in 1932 and because of the depression had to leave St. Louis for a farm near Devils Elbow Missouri along the Big Piney River. They lived there for 29 years. They were in the process of moving closer to Waynesville when Bud suffered a fatal heart attack. Doris had a "green thumb" however she hated farm life.
