Mary Shushinsky, "Aunt Mary," Anchorage, Alaska, died April 26 at home with her great-nephew and niece by her side.

Aunt Mary was born on May 13, 1914, in the coal-mining town of Shenandoah, a daughter of the late Casmir and Antoinette Macknis Shushinsky.

She moved to Ringtown as a child, where Aunt Mary spent the rest of her working life as a farmer.

Aunt Mary grew a colorful garden of flowers and vegetables that pleased the palate of many local Schuylkill County residents. She lived a very simple life at peace with nature and all her wildlife and bird friends. She was an avid Phillies baseball fan and enjoyed watching her brother, Matthew "Uncle Mickey" Shushinsky, play for the local Ringtown club.

Mary was a very unselfish person and she opted to take care of her mother and father on the farm instead of pursuing other personal goals in life.

In 1999, Aunt Mary was bitten by a rabid raccoon on her farm which she killed with her cane, but the resulting injuries left her unable to care for herself. As a result of her injury, Aunt Mary was taken care of by her grand-niece, Isabel Tucker, and her husband, John, in Harrisburg.

In 2000, her great-nephew, Mike Fetko and his wife, and Aunt Mary's loving caregiver, Toshiko, brought Aunt Mary to Alaska, where she resided with her brother, Matthew, and the Alaska Fetko family until her death at home.

Even though Aunt Mary found a new and beautiful world of nature in Alaska, she would always long for her Pennsylvania "simple home."

Aunt Mary was a sweet and dear woman who left us with many wonderful poems, stories and memories. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, John, Casimir, Anthony and Matthew; a sister, Isabella; a nephew, George Alinsky; and a niece, Blanche Fetko.

Surviving are numerous great-, grand- and great-grand-nephews and nieces.

May Aunt Mary rest in peace in heaven with God as she is finally laid beside her mother and father and other members of her immediate family at the "Our Lady of Lourdes" cemetery in Shenandoah Heights.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from Annunciation BVM Roman Catholic Church, Broad Mountain Avenue, Frackville, with Monsignor William Glosser officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Nice–Hart Funeral Home Inc., Frackville, is in charge of arrangements.
