U.S. Congressman. He studied medicine at Winchester Academy Virginia and began to practice medicine in Mount Sterling, Illinois in 1834. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced to practice law in Mount Sterling, Illinois. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was elected Brigadier General of the Illinois Militia in 1844. He was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives (1850-54, 61). In 1862, he was appointed by Illinois Governor Yates as a member of the commission to confer with the British and Canadian authorities on the establishment of continuous water communication between the United States and Canada. In addition, he constructed the Quincy & Toledo and the Quincy, Alton & St. Louis Railroads and served as president of both companies. In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. After leaving Congress, he engaged in farming, moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1891 and lived in retirement until his death.
