CHECK FORGER NABBED TUESDAY
---------
Forges $8.00 Check on Wm. Walter, Caught After Attempt to Cash Check at Allen's Cafe.
---------
Just a few minutes after he had forged a check, Joe Breau was under arrest in Morton Tuesday afternoon.
The man had been loitering in this vicinity for several days. On Tuesday he asked to cash a check at Allen's Cafe in the amount of $8.00 and made payable by Wm. Wolter. Suspecting something wrong, Wm. Allen walked up to the bank to cash the check before giving the stranger the money.
N.M. Mahlum, cashier of the Farmers State Bank of Morton, recognized at once that the check was not of Mr. Wolter's handwriting. In company with Mr. Allen, Mr. Mahlum started for the restaurant and on the way Mr. Allen spied the man sneaking up the alley. He was cornered in a building, and BILL BRAZIL, local marshall, was summoned, and made an immediate arrest.
The sheriff's office was notified and Deputy L.R. North made the trip to Morton, returning to Olivia with the prisoner who was lodged in the county bastile.
It is thought that this man, who gave the name as Joe Breau at the time of his arrest, had also cashed forged checks at Franklin and Fairfax. (Morton Enterprise - Thursday, Jan. 23, 1930)
