She was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Fergus Falls, the daughter of George and Lillie (Frank) Mittelstadt. She was baptized at Western Evangelical United Brethren Church, and was a member of United Methodist Church of Peace in Fergus Falls.
She graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1937, and
married Abraham "Abe" Ewert on Sept. 2, 1941. They farmed in Western Township until 1962, when they moved to Fergus Falls.
Bernice and Abe owned a neighborhood grocery store, West Lincoln Market, for a short time. She worked at Falls Woolen, Kimber Awning Company, and Econ-O-Clean Dry Cleaners.
She then became a seamstress at Rosenblatt's, a local clothing plant, until she retired.
Bernice enjoyed sewing, cooking, and watching sports. She was a coronet player in the high school band and also played the piano and organ. Bernice was an avid
bowler, participating in League bowling, where she competed in mixed doubles with Abe and also in several women's leagues.
She and Abe were members of the Eagle's Club for many years. They enjoyed Saturday nights dancing and spending time with their family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 61 years, Abe, in 2002; her parents; and her brothers, Gordon and Aaron.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Diane) of Fergus Falls, and Bruce (Rita) of Brainerd; five grandchildren, Chris (Stephanie) Ewert of Fergus Falls, Melissa (Lee) Keller of Fergus Falls, Adam Ewert of Brooklyn, N.Y., Shane Ewert of Hohhot, China, and Jesse Ewert of Duluth; four great-granddaughters, Alyssa, Alanna and Aleah Keller of Fergus Falls, and Megan Ewert of Fergus Falls; and one great-grandson, Jace Ewert of Fergus Falls.
