US Congressman, North Carolina Governor. He was serving as Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives when Governor Davis S. Reid resigned his office in December 1854 to become a United States Senator. We was then elevated to the Governorship by virtue of his position, serving from December 6, 1854 until January 1, 1859, when Thomas S. Bragg assumed the office. He was then elected as a Democrat to represent North Carolina's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1855 to 1861.
