Mr John F Abel, 58
John F. Abel, of Knoxville, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Forest Sanders Hospital. He was 58.
A member of First United Methodist Church in Dayton, Mr. Abel was a former resident of Dayton.
He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Tennessee and was a past member of Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Al Curtis Orchestra. A band director at Bearden High School for 29 years until retirement, Mr. Abel was with Krogers for the last five years. An adjudicator and clinician in the Southeastern states as well as Mexico, Spain and Italy, he was an honorary life member of East Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, a member of Phi Beta Mu National Band Directors Association and of the Knoxville Musicians Association local #546.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fulton and Grace Abel; and sister, Emily Jo Morgan.
Survivors include his daughters, Betsy and Katie Abel and their mother, Carolyn Abel, all of Knoxville; and sister, Nan Henderson of Cleveland.
Memorial services were conducted Friday at Gentry-Griffey Chapel in Knoxville with Mr. Tom Harrington officiating. The body was cremated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association and Bearden High School Band c/o Bearden High School, Knoxville, TN.
