The oldest surviving child of seven to second generation Irish parents, Thomas J Martin and Ellen Duffy. Was a cattle driver in Montana by age 15. Worked in the mail car for the railroad from age 19 to the end of his life. James was Worshipful Master of the Masonic East Gate Lodge of Fargo in 1933. He and wife Mary Elliott (b Scioto County, Ohio) raised three sons in North Fargo: Jere Jr, Fred and Ralph. James died of tuberculosis at the sanatorium in Dunseith when there was no more that could be done for him in Fargo. Grandchildren: Mary Martin McAdams, Renton WA. Douglas James Martin, Pacifica CA. Sarah Lynne Martin, Richfield MN.
