James H Short was the third of six children born to Samuel Short 1840 – 1907 and Sirena Jane Day 1845 – 1924.

Census records confirm that when Jim was a growing up, he lived in a rural community on what is now Walker Church Road, Bulls Gap, TN. His home was very near the Gulley cemetery and the (one room log) Walker School house on Nubbin Ridge. The Gulley and the Short families were very near neighbors as Jim and Dona were growing up, and they would have attended the Walker school. It was common for the families for miles around to gather, about one evening a week, at the little log school house for what was called Singings.

James H. Short took Dona Gulley to be his bride on July 28,1894. They had 5 children in 18 years: Hila Flora Short 1895–1977, Hila married Henry Harrison Hawkins on Oct 22, 1916; William H Short 1896–; Gertrude Short 1903–; John C Short 1910–1930, John died at age 20; Howard Short 1914-.

It has not been determined when Johns family went to Virginia. In 1929 when the banks all closed the nation was thrown into the Great Depression people were moving any where that they could get employment

On April 29. 1930 the census found Jamea and the family living in a rented house in Dover, Goochland, Virginia. Her son, William, was declared the head of the household, William was working as a farm laborer for wages. No one else in the household of six were working.

A sad day developed on Sept. 24, 1030. James's son John passed away in Virginia. He and Dona had their son's body shipped back home, to Tennessee, for burial. It is assumed that they remained in Bulls Gap after the burial because only a month later that was where James died.

James's death certificate revealed that he died on Oct. 27, 1930 at three o'clock in the afternoon. It said that he had been suffering from Arteriosclerosis for 2 years and his blood pressure had been 275. He had under gone an unreadable ailment that caused him to collapse for the 10 days ago. The undertaker A.J. Stewart was the informant on the certiicate. It also stated that the body was to be buried in the Beckner Cemetery. (The Beckner cemetery was sometimes referred to as the Gulley Cemetery.)

It was a sad day when for a second time in a month Jim's family and friend's gathered at the Gulley cemetery to bid him farwell. (Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
