Mr. Hammond was born Apr 27, 1920, in Wichita Falls. He graduated from Texas A&M University, and was a supporter of the Alumni Association. He served as past president of the Boys Club and worked on many fund-raisers for the organization. He was a founder and past president of the Mavericks. A former Wichita Falls City Council member, he was a civic leader. He was a member of the Wichita Club, and the University Club. He was a pioneer in the development and manufacture of oil field drilling equipment. From 1942 to 1994 he owned the Lone Star Tool Co., founded by his father in 1913 and one of the oldest oil field manufacturing companies in Texas. A member of the International Association of Drilling Contractors, he was well known throughout the drilling industry. He was a member of the One Hundred Club. He and Martha Favor were married May 16, 1942, in College Station, Texas. She died in 1994. He was an Episcopalian.

Survivors include two sons, Roy of Wichita Falls and Jeff of Dallas; a daughter, Suellen Hogue of Dallas; two sisters, Billy Verheiden of Roanoke, Va., and Fay Cunningham of Waco, Texas; five grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
