Walter Howard Erwin was the son of Walter Marshall Erwin of Caddo Parish, Louisiana and Pearl Landers Erwin of Talladega. He lived in Hueytown, Alabama where he met Mary Virginia West, whose father was pastor of their church. They married and faithfully attended Bethlehem United Methodist Church the rest of their lives.

He was a painter by trade. He served as Lay Speaker at his church and for a few years served as pastor of Philadelphia United Methodist Church in Guin, Alabama. His sister-in-law and her husband, Doris and Jim McKay, were members of that church. He proudly served as a Marine in World War 2.

His brother, Henry "Red" Erwin, was awarded a Medal of Honor for his heroism during WW2, when he picked up a threw out a lit phosphorous bomb burning at thousands of degrees from the bomber he and his crewmates were in, saving their lives.

Uncle Howard and Aunt Mary had two children, Alan and Danny. He and his wife Mary hosted many family reunions for the Wests, especially at Thanksgiving. I have fond memories of Thanksgiving at the Erwins. Howard preceded Mary in death and they are buried together at Valhalla in Midfield, Alabama.
