Joseph H. BURGE Sr.

NEWPORT NEWS - Joseph Harry Burge Sr., 89, a native and lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at The Chesapeake, where he resided the last few years.
He worked at Newport News Shipbuilding for a short time before serving in WW II, with the Army Combat Engineers in the South Pacific, and then retired from Langley Air Force Base as a carpenter. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class, was a member of St. Tammany Masonic Lodge #5, and was a Shriner. He enjoyed woodworking.
Mr. Burge was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vernie Freeman Burge; and his son, Joseph Burge Jr.
He is survived by a daughter, Sarah Burge Faison and husband, David; daughter-in-law, Melita Burge; three grandchildren, Benjamin Burge, Leslie Burge, and Natalie Harris and husband, Phillip; one great-grandchild, Brayden Harris; and many extended family members.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, immediately followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m., in the chapel by the Rev. Rita A. Callis. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, with Masonic Rites and military honors.
