BAKER, Varney W. Baker of 3150 Gateway, Springfield, passed away at a local care center April 19, 1985, at the age of 80. Varney W. Baker was born in Eugene on March 16, 1905, to parents Fred and Mabel Baker. He was a lifetime resident of Lane County and had grown up and received his education here. Varney Baker was employed by the Mount June Lumber Mill where he worked the dry kiln and as a trucker until his retirement. He was a charter member of the Northwood Christian Church and belonged to the Eugene Eagles Aerie No. 275, a charter member of the Springfield Moose Lodge No. 1726, the Springfield Elks Lodge, the Emerald Horseshoe Pitchers Association and a past member of the Men’s Cascade Chorus. He was also an avid bowler and enjoyed dancing. Varney Baker is survived by his sons and their wives, Bill and Shirley Baker of Springfield, David and Sue Baker of Eugene, Michael and Mary Baker of Springfield; daughters and their husbands, Betty and Richard Brown of Eugene, Beverly and Bernard Nelson of Brookings, Charlene and Joe Oxenford of Christmas Valley; 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ace Baker and his wife Geraldine, and a sister, Reha Kau, all of Sodaville. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 23, 1985 at 2 p.m. in the MAJOR-FREDERICKSEN SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Gary Wells officiating. Committal and interment will be at Springfield Memorial Gardens.
