The following is from Roland W Selman's obituary published in a Chattanooga, TN newspaper Jaunary 3, 1957.

The Rev. Roland W. Selman, who helped organize the Northside Baptist church here and was its pastor for many years, died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 72.

The Rev. Mr. Selman had been a Baptist pastor since 1914 and was pastor emeritus of the Northside church at the time of his death. He resided at 1201 Westwood Ave.

He was born in Rome, GA Jan. 6, 1886, the son of Elizabeth Wooten and William Lumpkin Selman. he was educated at Berry School, Moody Institute, Mercer University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He became pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sylvania, GA., serving from 1914 until 1919, when he took over the pastorate of the First Baptist church of Wadley, GA. From 1920 until 1922 he served as pastor of the Central Baptist church of Gainesville, GA. He went back to the pastorate at Sylvania from 1922 until 1925, and in that year served again as pastor of the church at Gainesville.

In 1926, the Rev. Mr. Selman came to the North Chattanooga Baptist Church here, and when the church divided into two groups, the Calvary Baptists and the Northside Baptist, he became first pastor of the latter and served there until 1942.

In that year he took over the pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Etowah, TN., and served there until 1947. He then served at Signal Mountain Baptist Church until his retirement.

He had been on the board of managers of the Baptist Children's Home, trustee of Carson-Newman College, chairman of the executive committee of the Ocoee Association and vice president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention.

He is survived by his wife, Augusta Burch Selman; two sons, the Rev. William L. Selman of Atlanta, and James D. Selman of Hamilton, Ohio; a brother Dempsey Selman of Rome, GA; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Conner and Mrs. Earl Pippin of this city and Mrs. Charles H. Jones of Tuscaloosa, Ala,. and eight grandchildren.

The Rev. Mr. Selman had two other sons. Roland W. Selman Jr., a bakery research chemist, died last April 1 in St. Louis. First Lt. John Burch Selman was killed in action in World War II.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow from the Northside Baptist Church, and interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park. Dr. Charles Lemons, Dr. Carl Giers and the Rev. George McClure will officiate.

The body will lie in state at the church for an hour before the services.

Active pallbearers will be Dr. W. W. Evans, Kyah Evans, the Rev. Richard Allmon, Fred Seepe, Sam Connor, Fred Campbell, Kirk Woods, Charles H. Jones and John Stroupe.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the Northside Baptist church and members of the Chattanooga Pasotrs' Assn.
