Aaron was born in Selma, Alabama in 1909. His family had immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1891. He was the son and one of eight children of Clara and Israel Bendersky.
In 1903 the Bendersky family came to Selma in a move encouraged by a close relative, Sam Zemurray, who had already established his family in this area. (Zemurray later became president of United Fruit Company and maintained his close relationship with the Bendersky family throughout his life.)
In 1905 His father and son Nathan opened a pawnshop at 117 Alabama Ave. in an old building that had been a saloon.
From that modest beginning, the I. Bendersky and Son business expanded, offering jewelry, musical instruments, sporting goods and hardware and later included sons Nathan, Jake, Victor and Aaron. With an extensive remodeling in 1938, I. Bendersky and Son became one of central Alabama's largest concerns of its kind.
Aaron started his career at I. Bendersky's as a youth. During his school days he worked intermittently in the store and in 1926 became a full-time member. He was in charge of all wholesale business for the firm.
