Robert Simpson Irwin was born 14 November 1814, the eldest son of William Irwin and Margaret J."Peggy" Purviance. Robert and his parents spent seven weeks traveling by wagon from North Carolina to the banks of the Sangamon River in Illinois.

Robert married 19 January 1837 in Sangamon County, IL to Cynthia Duncan. They were the parents of William Franklin, Martha J., Sanford, James S., Green Perry, Mary, Robert, Oscar Drunery, Harvey Douglas, and Charles Carroll.

In 1854, Robert Irwin bought interest in a water-powered grist and saw mill in Sangamon County, IL. Later, he owned this mill himself. The mill was located near the Irwin Iron Bridge, and was torn down by an ice storm in February 1867. Robert also owned a farm of 320 acres in Salisbury, IL.

Robert Simpson Irwin died 3 May 1874 and is buried in Farmer's Point Cemetery, Menard County, IL.
