Monroe was the son of Samuel Landrum and Patience Madella Beard, both of Union County, South Carolina. His parents moved to Georgia and his father died in Hall County. According to some accounts I have read, his father was high-jacked on the road and murdered. His mother Patience was living in Frogtown, Lumpkin County, Georgia in 1850 and may have died there between 1850 and 1860.

Monroe and his wife Agnes Tate Landrum had at least 9 children:
