John was born Joannes Adamus Thaler in Roemisch-Katholische, Hoerdt, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany in 1843. He was the son of Jacob Thaler (1806 - ?) and Maria Sibillia Wolff Thaler (1806 - 1894). In 1869 John emigrated to United States and settled in Erie, Pennsylvania. He married Frances Voelker (1845 - 1926). They had ten children (nine daughters, one son):

* Emma Thaler Sauer (1872 - 1912)
