Arlene N. Abegglen, age 77 of Decorah, died Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a long battle with cancer. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 26, 2011 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Marion Pruitt-Jefferson officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Monday at the church, one hour before the service. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is serving the family.

Arlene Norma (Olson) Abegglen was born on June 22, 1934 in Osseo, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Stella (Anderson) Olson. She attended school in Osseo. As a young teenager, she began working at Thoma’s Café. She graduated from Osseo High School with the class of 1952. After graduation, she moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin and worked at Woolworth’s. That is where she met LeRoy H. Abegglen. They were united in marriage on July 5, 1958 in La Crosse. To this union two children were born, Judy and David.

The family moved to Decorah in 1961 when Roy took a job at Deco Products. Arlene was a stay-at-home mom for several years, before she began working at the Luther College Print Shop where she was employed for 25 years. Arlene was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Arlene and Roy were members of Silvercrest Golf & Country Club and the Elk’s Lodge. After her retirement she enjoyed volunteering at the Food Pantry at First Lutheran Church and the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She also loved her Aqua-size classes as well as knitting and sewing. She was also an excellent cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy on December 31, 1999; three brothers: Spencer, Gordon and Aldie Olson; and two sisters, Joann Thoma and her baby sister Violet.

Arlene is survived by her daughter Judy Abegglen of Decorah, her son David Abegglen of Ankeny, IA; two sisters, Jane Curler of Eau Claire, WI and Mary (Bob) Fronek of New Lenox, IL; and five sisters-in-law: Delores Olson of Onalaska, WI, Allene Olson, Kathy Olson, Evelyn Weier of Little Rock, AR and Corrine Abegglen of La Crosse, WI.
