Howard was the son of Mary and John Kortes.
He was united in marriage to Leonora Lehman, daughter of Bessie and Leo Lehman of Portland, Michigan in Dekalb, Indiana on Aug 17, 1937.
He and his wife Lee were the parents of 3 children, 2 girls and 1 boy.

Howard W. Kortes, 82, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and formerly of Portland, died Dec. 22, 1999. He was born in Lakeview, MI. Nov. 3, 1917, the son of John M. and Mary Magdalene (Force) Kortes.
He graduated from Western Michigan University, and was a member of the Theta Chi Delta Fraternity.
He was a real estate broker in St. Johns and owned and operated indoor and outdoor movie theaters in Michigan.
He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Hot Springs Valley Men's 18 Hole Golf League and the Seniors Golf Association. He was a member of the Hot Springs Valley Lion's Club, the American Legion Post of St. Johns, past president of the Rotary Club of St. Johns, and a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Portland. He also played with a professional baseball team.
Surviving are his wife, Irene M. Kortes, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; son, Thomas R. Kortes of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters, Margo A. Kortes of Lansing and Mary Lee Kortes-Ambel of New York, N.Y.; stepson, Steven A. Correll of Woodstock, Ga.; stepdaughter, Kathleen A. Barry of Flint; one granddaughter, five step grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Dawdy of Trufant; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leonora (Lehman) Kortes; his parents, and brother, Russel Kortes.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
