Mrs. Katharine W. Hand

Services for Mrs. Katharine Whiting Hand, former Topekan who died August 23 in West Newton, Mass., following a brief illness, were held there, with interment in Mount Hope cemetery in Topeka.
She was the wife of the late T.S. Hand.

She was born July 22, 1868, near Milford, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albe B. Whiting. She came to Topeka with her parents in 1877 and was married June 1, 1892. For the past several years she resided in China.

Survivors are two daughters, Miss Katharine Hand of Tripoli, Lebanon, and Mrs. Ralph R. Shrader of West Newton; two grandchildren, Katharine Whiting Shrader of New York and William Whiting Shrader of West Newton, and several nieces and nephews.

Notes:
According to Shawnee County, Kansas marriage records, Katharine L. Whiting, 25, Topeka, married Talmage S. Hand, 28, New York City, on June 1, 1892. The ceremony was performed by L. Blakesley, pastor of 1st Congregational Church.

The account of the wedding was in the Topeka Daily Capital, Sunday, June 5, 1892, page 12. Several hundred society people attended. Arthur Capper was one of the ushers. Rev. Charles M. Sheldon assisted in the ceremony.

The account of the lavish wedding ended with this: "Mr. Hand, who has been an active factor in society and among literary people in this city, has accepted a position in New York with the Forum Publishing Company, and he and his bride departed Thursday morning for that city....."

The 1900 census has Katherine and Talmage Head living in Montclair, Ward 1, Essex, New Jersey. Their daughter Katherine W. Hand was 3.

On Oct. 31, 1908, at Hoboken, New Jersey, Tallmadge Sherman Hand, born Dec. 20, 1864, married Laura Eliza Tyrrell, according to marriage records found at Ancestry.

The 1915 census has the daughter of Katharine and Talmage, also named Katherine, living in Topeka with her younger sister, Elizabeth. Katherine was 17; Elizabeth was 13. I do not know where their parents were.
