Jacob Schaad Under Knife Thursday, Expires on Saturday
Had Been Resident of County for many Years
Mr. Jacob F. Schaad, who lived near Rainbow, one among the last patients to be operated upon by Dr. William R. Dabney, who was arrested Friday afternoon on a lunacy warrant [Note: This MAY be a reference to a mental health commitment order, which can be issued by the court upon the showing of cause that the named individual may be an imminent threat to themselves or others due to mental illness. This empowers the authorities (not necessarily law enforcement - although it is they who usually get to carry it out) to take someone into custody for commitment to a mental hospital for observation or treatment.] died Saturday evening at 7:10 o'clock in the private hospital of Dr. Dabney in the Union block. Thursday morning Mr. Schaad went to Dr. Dabney's office where the operation was performed. When he left home Mr. Schaad expected to return in the afternoon for it is said he had been told bt Dr. Dabney that the operation was a simple matter and that he would not be troubled much. It was for the removal of cancer of the superior maxillary or upper jaw.
Mr. Schaad arrived at the office a few minutes before 9 o'clock and preperations for the opertion had been made. The patient was at once place on the operation table.
Operation Seemed Successful
Two local physicians witnessed the operation which is said to have consumed four or five hours. Dr. Dabney was in charge and performed the operation. The other doctors had not been in a case with him in a year. They watched the work closely and say they saw nothing unnecessary done nor anything done improperly. The operation was apparently a skillful and successful one.
During the opertion one of the physicians who witnessed the operation had an altercation with Dr. Dabney on account of the rough way in which he treated the patient it is said and threatened to leave. They were begged by the nurse however to remain until the end for Mr. Schaad's sake. Dr. Dabney is said to have asked them to remain also. This they finally consented to do and from this on it is said Dr. Dabney was more gentle in his treatment of his patient.
After the operation was completed, Mr. Schaad was removed to one of the adjoining rooms and put to bed. He remained there during the next two days and in this room he died.
Post Mortem Held
Sunday a post mortem examination was held by the coroner but that official refuses to give out any information on the case stating that "It is not a county case."
Mr. Jacob F. Schaad was born in Monroe county and was 65 years of age. For 42 years he had been a resident of Washington county devoting his time to farming.
He was married and is survived by his widow, five sons and two daughters. He also leaves two brothers, George of Marietta and Joseph who lives in the country.
