Ode's parents were Matthew Simpson Swinford and Rachel Elizabeth Digby, farmers in Central Illinois. Ode was the oldest son and had 10 siblings. All but 2 lived to adulthood. Most of them stayed in the farming communities around Coles County, Illinois.

In 1910, Ode married Sadie Luella Byrne. They lived in her hometown of Olney, Illinois and had four sons there. They were Loren, Harold, Myrl and Loren. Around 1919, Ode moved his family to Joliet, Illinois where he took a job working at the state prison. While living in Joliet, Ode and Sadie had a daughter, Adeline. Later he worked as a janitor at Joliet Central High School. In 1941 he died of cancer of the jaw.
