James lived in the Flat Gap section of Valdese with brothers Charles, Harry, Paul, and Allen, and a sister, Sandra Kay.

According to his obituary, James had been receiving treatment for a 3-month-long lingering illness (lymphoma) at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, and had become ill again shortly after returning home. Although he was taken to the local hospital, he died enroute.
