Katie Mauldin, 96 passed away July 20, 2003 in Orlando, Florida where she had lived since 2000. A Broward County pioneer, she moved to Pompano in 1925 at the age of 19 with her parents, John and Sallie Awtrey. She was born August 5, 1906 in Bankston, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years Frank. They owned Mauldin's Dept. Store from 1948 til 1970; she was manager and buyer for the women's and children's departments. A devout Christian, she was a member of First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for 40 years and taught Sunday School for 25 year; charter member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star; and the Pompano Historical Society. She will be greatly missed by daughters Gail M. Pyle of Orlando and Joy M. Wagner of Lafayette, CA; five granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. The family invited friends to visit them in the parlor of First Baptist Church at 1:00 on Thursday July 24, 2003 followed by the funeral at 1:30. Burial took place afterwards at the Pompano Beach Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Florida Baptist Children's Homes, P. O. Box 8190, Lakeland, Florida 32802. Arrangements were handled by Kraeer Funeral Home, Pompano Beach.
