Robert C. Howe

GREENFIELD — Robert Cooke Howe, 73, of 75B Wells St., Millhouse Apartments, died Wednesday (9-14-11) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.
He was born in West Brattleboro, Vt., on Oct. 26, 1937, the son of Edgar C. and Ann E. (Cooke) Howe. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1956 and was a lineman on the football team and scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff on Thanksgiving morning. At his 55th reunion he was elected Honorary Class President. He had been a resident of Greenfield most of his life.
Bob was an electrician and a member of IBEW Local 7 and was involved in the construction of Greenfield Community College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Also, he was a foreman at the Northfield Mountain Project and an electrical supervisor at Erving Paper Mill for 12 years until 1992.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Yellowstone from 1956-1960 and attained the rank of petty officer second class.
Bob was very interested in sports. He was an official for softball for 40 years, volleyball for over 10 years and a goal judge for UMass hockey. Bob started the Franklin County Lassie League girls softball program with his wife Betty in 1960. Bob was a youth hockey coach for the Franklin County Hockey Association for 20 years; many years with his son Todd. Also, he was president and on the board of directors.
He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and was a member of the Calvary Cemetery Finance Committee.
Bob was a member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks.
He was an elected official for 10 years in the old town meeting as a precinct representative and worked at the polls for all elections, a job he loved to do.
Bob enjoyed golfing at the Country Club of Greenfield. He loved people and his wife Betty would always say "he's running for mayor" as he worked the room.
Bob survived several heart attacks and bypass operations. The attacks and operations left him with the feeling of not having a purpose, which led him to volunteer at the Franklin Medical Center twice a week in the emergency department.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, the former Betty Gibbs Gibowicz; a daughter, Barbara Jean (Howe) Becker of North Chelmsford; a son, Todd Robert Howe and his wife Regina Ann (Leh) of Montague; two brothers, Raymond Howe and his wife Jill of Limerick, Maine, and Richard Howe and his wife Jean of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Taylor R. Howe and Riley A. Howe, both of Montague, and Alexander F. Becker of North Chelmsford, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in Blessed Sacrament Church, 221 Federal St., with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in South Cemetery in Leyden.
Calling hours will be this evening from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., Suite 2, Greenfield, MA 01301 or to the Greenfield High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 1332, Greenfield, MA 01302.
