Charles Ira Mitchell was a son of Charles Henry Mitchell and Louisa "Lou" Howell Mitchell.

C. I. Mitchell, Pioneer Temple Merchant Dies

TEMPLE- Funeral services for pioneer Temple businessman C. I. Mitchell Sr. were to be at Grace Presbyterian Church here at 2 p.m. today. Dr. Marion Conditt and Dr. Garland Shell officiating, burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Mitchell became ill at his store at 1 p.m. Tuesday and died in a hospital at 5:15 p.m. He was 86.

Mr. Mitchell bought a bicycle shop here for $75 in 1901 and later expanded it into a sporting goods business. He retired in 1954.

He came to Temple from Hill County before there were any sidewalks and paved streets in the town. He fixed the first automobile flat tire in town for Dr. Raleigh White.

His four sons grew up in the business until they graduated from Temple Junior College.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Georgia and attended school there until he was 13 when his family moved to Hill County near West in 1891.

He was interested in science and natural history. He became interested in astronomy and built his own telescope in the 1930's. It took him 482 days to grind the lens. He also built a home observatory and wrote about it for Scientific American magazine in 1937.

He recently gave the telescope to Temple Junior College.

He also was an Indian relic collector. He was active in Temple YMCA, Temple Pistol Club and other civic organizations.

He married Miss Nona Mae McKinley in 1903. He had been a member of Grace Presbyterian Church since 1920 and was on the church board several years.

Surviving are his wife; four sons, C. I. Mitchell Jr. of Los Alamos, N.M., Lee K. Mitchell and Joe M. Mitchell of Houston and Harley D. Mitchell of Temple; two brothers, Tom Mitchell of San Francisco and Bob Mitchell of Arkansas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
