∼William (Bill) J. Schmitt, age 92, a resident of St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, and longtime resident of Cleveland, WI, entered his eternal life on Friday, January 18, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.
Bill was born March 28, 1915, the son of Frank and Mary (Leonard) Schmitt in Cleveland.
Bill married Veronica Schladweiler of Farmer, South Dakota on September 26, 1939 at St. Wendel Catholic Church in Cleveland. Veronica preceded him in death on January 27,1981. After Veronica's death, Bill married June Salzman. She preceded him in death on April,27, 1997.
As a young man, Bill worked for area farmers, the Belitz Brothers Feed Mill and then the Kohler Co. until his retirement in 1980.
For over 40 years, Bill was an active member at St. Wendel Catholic Church, a member of the Holy Name Society and member of the National Catholic Order of Foresters. Some of Bill's favorite hobbies were raising chickens, gardening and playing cards.
Bill is survived by his children: Janet Seefield, Joan (John) Neumann, and Jean Willems; grandchildren: Nathan (Brenda) Dehne, Keith (Danae) Dehne, Duane (Barb) Dehne, Brian(Kathy) Dehne, Terri (Mike) Waack, Bill (Jenny) Neumann, Heather Willems and her friend, Liam, Matt Willems and Elizabeth Willems. Great grandchildren: Jason, Andy, Meghan Dehne, Camille & Griffin Dehne, Tess Dehne, Jamaica, Ron & Kayla Beckwith, Sam & Tim Waack, Francis, Clare, Victor & John Neumann.
William is also survived by his sister: Sister Mary Josephine Schmitt; June's two daughters: Katy and JoAnn; Katy's children: Alan (Jeannine)Arnold, Steve (Jacque) Arnold, and their children: Allison, Andy & Aaron Arnold, Grace & Rachall Arnold; JoAnn's children: Theresa, Caroline, Mary, John & Lee; sisters-in-law: Theresa Bayer, Margaret Gates, Luella Schladweiler, Irene Schladweiler, Elaine Schmitt; nieces, nephews, and many longtime friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his two wives, Veronica and June; his son-in-law: Steve Seefeld; his sisters and their spouses: Glen (Carl)Sukowatey, Rita (Herbert) Mahloch; his brothers and their spouses: Albert, George (Mary),Henry (Josephine), Joseph (Mary), Clarence (Betty), and Francis. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Lawrence Gates, Leo Kessler, Barney Bayer, Edward Schladweiler, Steve Schladweiler, Francis Schladweiler and Rose Chivington.
As Dad wished, no visitation will be held prior to the Mass of Resurrection. The Rev. Gerald Foley will preside at a private funeral Mass to be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at a later date.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
