ANOTHER PIONEER DEAD
Henry P. Benson Died Wednesday
Evening After Long Suffering.
Funeral This Afternoon.
H. P. Benson died at his home in this city Wednesday evening, March 4th, at 10 o’clock, aged 74 years, 1 month and 28 days.
Funeral services will be conducted at the residence today, Friday, at 1 p. m. by Rev. H. F. Reid. The body will be taken to the Deer Creek cemetery for interment.
Henry P. Benson was born in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, January 6, 1840. He went to Illinois in 1859 and was married February 27, 1862, at Rockford, Ill., to Miss Maria M. Travelute. He came to Marshall county in 1865 and took up a homestead on Horse Shoe creek in the northwest part of Marysville township. He returned to Illinois in the fall of 1866, brought his family here and settled on the homestead. He lived there for many years and then moved to a farm adjoining Hull. He has lived in the county ever since 1865 except five years spent in Colorado. He leaves surviving him, his wife, three daughters and three sons. The daughters are Mrs. Walter Barbour of Denver, Colo., Mrs. W. M. Kirkwood of Hull and Mrs. Etta Beavers of this city. The sons are Francis E. of this city, William of Arvada, Colo., and Chas. of Blackwell, Oklahoma. He also leaves two sisters and three brothers. They are Mrs. W. Raby of Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, Mrs. Herbert Rose and Charles and John Benson of Creston, Ill., and Robert Benson of Blackwell, Oklahoma.
The deceased was a member in good standing of the Modern Woodmen of America and I. O. O. F.
For nearly half a century the people of this part of Marshall county have known H. P. Benson and have known him as an honest, honorable man among men, and they have never known a dishonorable act of his. Loved by his family, respected by his neighbors, he was the peer of any man in the community. The whole community joins in mourning the death of this sturdy pioneer who has added his full share to the progress of this country.
