Julia Adelaide Connor, the 8th of eleven children born to Dr. Francis Ambrose Connor and the former Mary Dorothy [née Edwards] Connor, grew-up in the bounds of Cokesbury, South Carolina.

At the age of 18, Julia married Benjamin Zachariah Herndon on April 12th 1843. The following children were born to this union:
