Adam Martin was born around 1816 in Giles County, Va., a son of John Martin Sr. and wife Susanna Waggoner. Adam Martin's grandparents were Daniel Martin (1758-1824) and Mary Keatley (1756-1848) and Adam and Jane Waggoner.

Adam married Rebecca Scott, daughter of Francis Scott and wife Elizabeth Frith, on 04 Nov 1836 in Giles County. (Two of his brothers also married into the Scott family. Achilles married Elcy Scott and George, Nancy Scott.)

The children of Adam and Rebecca were:
1. Alonzo Martin (about 1839).
2. John F. Martin (about 1841), wife Sarah J. Calloway.
3. Joseph S. Martin (1843).
4. William Harvey Martin (1844/20 Jan 1909), married Martha Ann White and Mollie Kate Holdren. A photo and biography for William is on Find A Grave Memorial# 26492182. According to information on Find a Grave, William had eight children with Martha and nine with Mollie.
5. Elizabeth E. Martin (18 Jan 1846), husband Jacob T. Singleton.
6. George B. Martin Sr. (21 Nov 1848/06 July 1928). He married wife Mary Adaline Keatley (1852-1934), daughter of John and Susan Keatley. Mary and George Sr. had nine children:
7. Cynthia M. Martin (1850/07 Sept 1853, Mercer Co., W.Va.). Cynthia died before age 3 of "flux." (Online lists of "old diseases" define flux as "dysentery" or an "excessive flow or discharge of fluid like hemorrhage or diarrhea.")
8. Emma Melissa Martin (14 Sept 1853/17 Aug 1921), husband Powell Wade Gadd. They had 11 children.
9. Sara S. Martin (25 March 1856) who married William M. Foster, son of Richard and Zilthia Foster.
10. Lewis H. Martin (1859).

A local history -- Mercer County Historical Society, Princeton, W.Va., Mercer County History 1984, (Fourth printing, 2014. Walsworth Publishing Co.) Page 143. -- states he was born about 1816. Three censuses place his birth from 1814-16.
