Donald J. Aijala, 72, of Babbitt, died on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital. He was born on Sept. 9, 1939, in Ironwood, Mich.
He grew up in Hurley, Wis., where he graduated from high school; and he also was a graduate of Gogebic Junior College. Don was confirmed in 1954 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ironwood.
Donald was a resident of Babbitt since 1965. He worked for Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt for 26 years, 13 years on the railroad and 13 years as an electrician. He also was a T.V. serviceman in Babbitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Zachary Matschiner.
Donald is survived by the mother of his children, Glenda Aijala; children: Keith (Ruth) Aijala, Kathleen (Bob) Matschiner, Kevin Aijala, Kim (Kelly) Johnson, and Don (Mary) Aijala; grandchildren, Nicole (Brian) Cook of Ely and Alec Matschiner of Ely; six step-grandchildren: Ben, Desmond, Chris, Heather, Aaron and Wynn; one great-grandchild; step-grandchildren: Ava, Alec and Ashton; siblings, David Aijala, Wayne (Wanda) Kamps, Lonnie (Myra) Kamps, and Kathy Kamps.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood, Mich.
