Dan Leonard was born on June 16, 1752, Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He died on May 2, 1839, Ware, Massachusetts. He married Hope Clapp (b. Apr. 3, 1754, Middleboro; d. July 12, 1833, Ware, Mass.), the daughter of Elijah and Hopestill Thomas Clapp, on Oct. 15, 1775. They settled in Ware, Massachusetts where they were devoted Methodists and the first Methodist sermon in Ware was preached in their house. Following is the obituary for Dan Leonard from Zion's Herald, June 19, 1839:

Died in Ware, Mass., May 7, 1839, brother Dan Leonard, aged 87 years. Br. Leonard was well known by many of the old preachers as the first in this region who opened his doors for Methodist preaching. His house was long the place of entertainment for the early pioneers of the cross. From the time of his conversion to his death, more than 40 years, he lived a faithful, persevering and consistent Methodist; and as he lived, so he died, in the full hope of a glorious immortality beyond his grave. His suffering during the last eight months of his life, were very sever, but he bore them with Christian patience and resignation. By this dispensation of Providence, a large family has been deprived of a kind and devoted parent; the church in this place as lost one of its oldest members, a father in Israel, and the community a man who was respected by all who know him.
