Pence entered the army under Gen. Doniphan during the Mexican War, and took part in the long march from Ft. Leavenworth to Sante Fe, NM, and then to El Paso, and down into Monterrey, Mexico. In 1849 he went to California hoping to trade during the Gold Rush. He later returned to Missouri, and in 1861, joined the Confederate Army under Gen. Price. Pence served six months as Captain of Co. C of Col. Thompson's regiment. His first wife, Dinitia Estes, died in 1871, and he later married America Smith in 1880. Pence was an active Mason, and treasurer of the Kearney lodge.

William was the son of Adam and Anna Snell Pence; they moved to Clay County, Missouri from Kentucky when William was six months old.
William was the brother of: Josiah, Jackson, Robert, Adam,
Thomas, Alexander D., Margaret A., Nellie, Eliza, Lurania, and Catherine.
William and Dinitia were the parents of nine children:
Jefferson, William, Josiah, Robert L., Harrison, Lucinda, America, Eliza E., and Adam.
