Herman Carstens of Newton, a pioneer resident of the county, died last Friday at the age of 83 years. He was born in Germany and came to this country in 1852, locating on a farm in Newton, where he resided until his death. He had been blind the past 36 years and had lived with his son Emil. His wife died 23 years ago. Six children survive him. They are Emil Carstens, Mrs. Annie Diederichs, Mrs. Mary Retzlaff, Mrs. Sophia Wenholz, Mrs. Johanna Wehausen and Mrs. Caroline Schmidt
